Rakushin
Although all the meals I ate in Japan were amazing, there were a few stand outs that come to mind. In Osaka, it would be Rakushin. There was nothing that I didn’t love about this restaurant. The food was delicious, the design was beautiful, and it even had a small rock garden with a flowering peach tree behind the chef’s counter. And best of all was the chef’s wicked sense of humor. He would make jokes and periodically call one of his chefs out to tease and entertain us. We laughed to the point of tears. At the end of the meal, he brought out some of his ceramics collection to show and dug up some New Year’s kuro mame (sweet black beans) to share with us. The meal alone would have been one of my favorites, but these small touches and to be able to have a genuine and hilarious conversation with a chef solidified it as one of my favorite experiences as a whole.
