Mi Casa en Lisboa

Update: Mi Casa en Lisboa is now CLOSED, but its sister establishment, My Home in Porto is still open.

My Home in Lisbon was one of those places that, at first glance, appealed to my love of design and, in person, lived up to its promise of being a home away from home. Although situated upon a rather daunting hill, the strenuous return journey each day is immediately rewarded by the snug warmth and comfort that envelops you upon crossing its threshold. It is a place that feels lived in and is meant to be lived in, no matter the duration of your stay.

At the start of each day, you are greeted by the friendly faces of the staff as they prepare breakfast and are available to answer any questions. If lucky, the resident national treasure, Oliva the Dog, will be around for pets and cuddles. My days ended with a view overlooking the garden, where you can see the Igreja da Graça and the Castelo de São Jorge, which although always beautiful, was especially so when bathed in the golden light of sunrise: my first sight upon waking. For me, they were perfect days, and I wish that I could have stayed forever.

In the background, you can see the en suite bathroom. The door to the left of the sink leads to the toilet, and the tiling to the right is the entrance of the open, walk-in shower (with a rainforest showerhead!).

Breakfast:

Breakfast changes day to day, and I only got to experience it in its entirety once. On this day, there was a bowl of fresh fruit, chocolate chip cookies, scrambled eggs, orange juice, a pot of coffee, and bread with jam and butter.

The type of fruit and juice may change day to day as well as the main dish. On my second and last full day, there was a different dish in place of the eggs, but I was cutting it close to a lunch reservation and only had fruit. In addition, there is a fridge and small wine bar with beverages available for guest use, and the staff usually make a small loaf cake each day.
