Nugget Point Lighthouse and the Catlins
Listen: Cold Little Heart - Michael Kiwanuka
Nugget Point Lighthouse was basically our main and only reason for spending time in the Catlins, but I'm so glad that we did. The area was was, as you could expect, beautiful and full of rolling hills that were a bit reminiscent of Upstate NY. We got an early start in this direction after the weather nixed planned hiking and kayaking in the Fjordlands, but aside from getting to the lighthouse barely in time for sunset, we spent the afternoon chilling and trying to recuperate after the exhaustion of a week and a half of driving. This nomadic lifestyle mixed with sporadic outdoor activities was more exhausting than I'd anticipated, and at this point, we were both mentally hollowed out people, surviving on the adrenaline that comes with seeing new places and being surrounded by incredible landscapes.
Aside from a brief jaunt to the lighthouse, a quick stroll to the beach in the morning, and perhaps too much lounging about, we did manage to squeeze in some horseback riding. I do not have any photos, but if you're looking to do some riding, I would highly recommend the place we went with, Catlins Horse Riding. They were able to accommodate us super last minute, and the ride was tailored to our individual skill levels, how long we wanted to ride, and what types of scenery we wanted to see.
