I had been to Rome once before. It was on one of those organized trips that goes by at the pace of a strobe light. Rome! - Florence! - Barcelona! - And done! You've seen both nothing and everything. This time around, it was different and yet the same. It was my mom's first trip to Europe, which meant that seeing the sites was a must, but I was also sick with a fever, which meant that I wasn't in the mood to do much else. And so, at the end of this second visit, I found my relationship with this city to be almost in the same place as where we'd picked up. We're like neighbors that live in the same apartment building: we've bumped into each other a couple times and murmured a few pleasantries, but at heart, we are essentially strangers. However, I promise you this, Rome: Some day we will be friends.

Funny Story: The first time I went to Rome, I didn't make it to the Pantheon with the rest of my group. Some of my classmates - way more than you would have expected - fell for this scheme in this piazza where someone comes up to you, motions for your hand, and whips up a string bracelet. They charged them each 40€, and these idiots, instead of being like, 'This is, what, 25¢ worth of materials at the most?' were like, 'Okay! Here is my money.' It wasn't until they were talking with the guide that they found out that they'd been ripped off, and so they were brought to the police. I tend to be one of the stragglers in a group, and so I somehow ended with the bunch visiting the carabinieri.
